“. . . that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend . . . what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.”
The divine romance began before we had any comprehension of God, much less, His love for us. “Long before He laid down earth’s foundations, He had us in mind, had settled on us as the focus of His love, to be made whole and holy by His love” (Eph. 1:4 Msg).
God’s love for you is as vast and eternal and incomprehensible as He is because He IS love (1 Jn. 4:16b). So great is His love for you that He wants to strengthen you to comprehend it. It’s in knowing His love that surpasses knowledge that you’re filled with His fullness. In being filled with His fullness you are made whole and holy by His love.
How can you know an eternal love? Only by spending an eternity in the presence of that Love. And, this is why God sent His only begotten Son to die for your sins that separated you from Him. This is why Jesus rose from the dead, ascended to heaven, and sent the Holy Spirit to live in you. It was so “that you, being rooted and grounded in His love, may have strength to comprehend the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know” His eternal love by qualifying you to live eternally in His presence.
